O is for... (Christmas Day 15)
ORANGES
In our family we have the tradition of oranges at the bottom of our stockings. We haven't always done it, but just recently have started to.
The tradition is thought to have come from St. Nicholas. The story goes that he heard of a poor man that couldn't marry off his daughters because they had no dowry. St. Nicholas had inherited money and dropped 3 bags of gold down their chimney. The gold landed in the girls' stockings that were drying on the fire. The oranges are supposed to represent the gold at the bottom of the stocking.
